MONTGOMERY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects who were caught in the act of burglary. On November 30, a property owner south of Independence, Kansas reported to sheriff's officials they were watching on camera as two subjects were actively removing items from their property, according to Sheriff Ron Wade.

Picher, OK, Holds First Christmas Parade in 10 Years
Traffic on US 69 just south of the Kansas-Oklahoma border was halted on Saturday. The reason? The city of Picher, Oklahoma held a Christmas parade. While many other towns held parades over the weekend, Picher is unique because the town hasn't existed since 2013. Picher is part of the Tar Creek Superfund site where run-off from lead and zinc mining in the area polluted the area's water wells and soil leaving what the Environmental Protection Agency calls one of the most toxic areas in the United States.
Independence Removes Utility Drop Box
The city of Independence wants residents to know that the utility payment drop box located on west Laurel will be removed on Friday. Residents are asked to use the drop box in the semi-circle drive at Memorial Hall, pay in person, over the phone, or online instead starting on Friday.

The Field Kindley girls got off to a hot start shooting 54% from the field in the first half and would lead 30-26 at halftime. The second half started rocky for the Lady Nado as they would get cold from the floor and Taiylor and Kaylin Caron got into foul trouble. Despite shooting 23% in the second the Lady Nado, thanks in large part to good defense, extended their second-half lead and would win by 10. Head Coach Tyler Coots says it's a good feeling to get that first win out of the way.

This week in Cherokee County, Kansas, there were three incidents of concern. A Baxter Springs man was sentenced to over nine years for possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. In another case, a Galena man was charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly assaulting two people at Fort Riley. Lastly, a semi cattle hauler overturned near Baxter Springs, resulting in the closure of the road for a period of time. Fortunately, all cows survived and the driver was not injured.
