PREP BASEBALL: Clinton rallies to edge Edgerton in RVC Rock action

EDGERTON, Wis. — Edgerton starter Donovan Hatch had cruised through four innings as he looked primed to finish off a strong game and ruin Clinton’s three-game winning streak.

Not if the Cougars had anything to say about it.

Clinton rallied for seven runs in the fifth and held off a furious rally attempt by the Crimson Tide to secure an 8-6 win in Rock Valley Conference Rock action on Tuesday evening.

Logan Hendricks’ two-run double started the scoring frenzy by the Cougars (9-6, 6-5 RVC Rock) and he later scored on an error on the second baseman after stealing second. Gavin Wesling, who drew one of three walks in the frame, stole home to tie it up at four and Payton Whalen’s RBI single put Clinton ahead for good.

A run-scoring groundout by Logan Thill and a one-run single by Cooper Atkinson made it 7-4. Whalen added another RBI single in the seventh and Edgerton (6-9, 4-7) scored two runs in the bottom of the frame off a one-out fielder’s choice and a steal of home before a pop out ended the rally.

Collin Gill finished 2-for-4 for the Cougars while Whalen also had two hits. The Crimson Tide were limited to three singles by Tim Arnold, who went six innings and allowed six runs (five earned) with four walks and four strikeouts. Thill got the last three outs and wasn’t charged with a run.

    • UNION GROVE 10, BELOIT MEMORIAL 0: The hot-hitting Broncos racked up 12 hits and Landon Dessart threw five scoreless innings with seven strikeout to take down the Purple Knights in Southern Lakes Conference play.

Second-place Union Grove (17-4, 9-2) scored three runs in the second, added two in the third and four in the fourth while finishing with one in the fifth limit the game to five innings.

Owen West went 2-for-3 for visiting Beloit (1-13, 1-10) while Ruddy Ramirez added a double to his two-hit performance. Mitch Stuessy started on the mound and allowed eight earned runs on eight hits and four walks in 3 2-3 innings.
