Summer is almost here! The weather keeps getting warmer, and schools will be letting out soon.

At the Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library, we are ready for our Summer Reading Program. This year’s theme is “Adventure Begins at Your Library,” as everything is based on exploration and adventure.

Starting on June 18 and continuing through Aug. 13, the library will host special programs four days per week. Our major program of the week will be on Tuesdays and be open to all ages. Our first major event is the Gary Shelton Magic Show on June 18 at 10:30 a.m.

On Wednesdays, we have two events happening simultaneously: Story Time with Lee Lolkema and our Pop-Up program for children ages 6-12. Our first Summer Reading Program Wednesday will be June 26 at 11 a.m. We’ll team up with the Edenton Historical Commission to invite “Ms. Frizzle” to take over the Edenton Trolley for an adventure through the past. The event is open to youth ages 6-12.

Ms. Frizzle will introduce children to the history of the Edenton Tea Party by taking them on a journey 250 years into the past. Attendees will meet some of the brave ladies who signed the Edenton Resolves on Oct. 25, 1774. Seating for this event is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Thursdays are for the teens, as we have lined up a series of cool and crafty adventure-based activities. Our first teen program is an “escape room” on June 20 at 1:30 p.m. Participants will have to navigate a pirate-themed maze of clues and discover hidden treasure.

Lastly, Fridays feature our Family Film Matinee. Participants can escape the summer heat, eat some freshly popped popcorn, and enjoy a family-friendly film that everyone will enjoy. Our first showing is on June 21 at 2 p.m. The movie follows the exploits of an Italian-American plumber as he is dropped into a new world and must help a princess take on a turtle-like villain.

During the Summer Reading Program participants can earn prizes as they read from a variety of genres and work their way to the top prize. Children younger than 10 who read 20 or more books during the summer will receive, at the end of the program, a free 3D print, a free movie ticket at the Taylor Theater complete with popcorn and soda, an ice cream scoop at Blount’s, a book, a swag bag, and much more! Teens ages 10-18 who read 10 or more books and complete a book summary card for each title will receive the same prizes!

Registration for the Summer Reading Program starts Monday, June 3, and will close on July 15. The front desk, which will transform into an airport terminal to reach your imagination destination, will start accepting reading logs on June 18 so our young adventurers can start earning prizes. See our complete Summer Reading Program schedule as well as the latest additions to the collection. Visit the front desk or call us at 252-482-4112 for more information.

Have a great week, and we hope to see you at the library!
