    Edenton Tea Party Chapter of DAR installs new officers

    Edenton’s Tea Party Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution installed a slate of new leaders on May 8.

    Betty Corbin, state organizing secretary of the North Carolina State Society Daughters of the American Revolution, presided over the installation event.

    The new leaders are Bonnie Henn, chapter regent; Kay Caveney, first vice regent; Nicole Dalton, second vice regent; Clara King, chaplain; Melanie Gibbs, recording and corresponding secretary; Kim Gongwer, treasurer; Candace Roth, registrar; Anne Rowe, historian; and Celeste Maus, librarian.

    Chapter Regent Sandy Sperry hosted a luncheon for the local DAR chapter and presented 51 state and national awards earned by chapter members during the past year. Chapter Outstanding Junior Cameron Perry was also recognized. Sperry was presented with a proclamation signed by Mayor W. Hackney High Jr. and Town Clerk Corey Gooden, thanking her for her years of leadership and volunteerism in Edenton.

    Russell Corker was also presented an award for his volunteer service at the Cupola House and Hayes Farm Gardens and board of directors of the Cupola House, his service to the Edenton Rotary Club, and his vocal talents with the Albemarle Chorale. Corker and his fellow gardeners at the Hayes Farm were recognized with a team award.

    Marilyn Rutland, coordinator for the Hayes Farm Gardening team, accepted the Community Service Award on behalf of gardeners Suellen Bloom, Gerard Cooney, Peggy Copeland, Russell Corker, Kathy Miller, Annie Noffsinger, Bonnie Pierce, Paul Rega, Bruce Rutland, Christine Showalter, Sam Showalter, John Skinner, Sybil Skinner, and Jonathan Tobias.

    The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is a women’s service organization whose members can trace their lineage to an individual who contributed to securing American independence during the Revolutionary War.
