Authorities: Gun found in student’s backpack
A ninth grader in Florahome was apprehended in class Friday after school and law enforcement officials received a tip he brought a gun to campus. The boy, whose name and age have not been released, had a gun in his backpack while attending Q.I. Roberts Junior-Senior High School, according to a Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Facebook post.
Tea Time for Mother’s Day
Everyone was in a festive mood Friday when a Palatka school celebrated Mother’s Day early with students having tea with their mothers and mother figures. Celebrations took place in a prekindergarten class and in one of the classes at the One in a Mellon daycare at the school. Sawyer Barnes, 4, made her mom a Mother’s Day card.

Artist Martha Ferguson Selected for Cultural Exchange with St. Augustine Sister City Aviles, Spain
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla., May 10, 2024 – In connection with the 100th anniversary celebration of the relationship between St. Augustine, Florida and its sister city Aviles, Spain, local artist Martha Ferguson has been selected to travel to Aviles in August and participate in activities with a Spanish artist in St. Augustine during September. Ferguson was selected following a call to artists with experience painting “en plein air,” and who have dedicated themselves to elevating the arts in St. Johns County. A painting by Ferguson, who will receive a stipend for travel and purchase of the painting, will be presented to the City of Aviles as a gift from the Mayor of St. Augustine.
