LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)– People are racing to Design Day at MSU, which first began in 1994 and is on track to showcase the College of Engineering students’ work.

“You’re starting to see cars where you can control your car’s motion. Eventually, getting to level four, maybe even level five autonomy, where the car drives itself,” Leo Kempel, Dean of the College of Engineering said.

Nearly one thousand spartan engineers will unveil their end-of-semester projects, and one team- PoliMOVE MSU- will feature a 1.2-million-dollar race car called the Indy Autonomous Challenge Car.

“So, autonomous, it’s to help better the mobility for people. So, if you can’t drive or if you have issues with sight or vision,” Andy Keats, Indy Autonomous Challenge said.

The car represents more than just speed, as Kempel said MSU is going to continue making sure that Michigan is at the global center of mobility.

He said this car allowed students to do so.

“We are the world’s leaders in manufacturing and in mobility. And so that’s going to continue to be a big part of the mission for our college,” Kempel said.

“If you can control it and make it work at 190 miles an hour, I think we can do it at that 70,” Kempel said.
