A Look Inside Boley's Historic Rodeo
This historic all-Black town, which is home to the nation's oldest Black rodeo, showcases its enduring impact and lively spirit at the 121st Boley Rodeo. When I visited my first historical all-Black town in April, someone asked the group I was with what we knew about Boley as we were on our way there. One person said they imagined it looking like an old town from a Western film. For me, the only reference I had to compare Boley to were images I’d seen from the past of Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I had no idea what this historically all-Black town would look like, but I knew it would be rich in history.
Feeding the Vets
VFW Post 539 in Henryetta held its Feed the Vets program Thursday at New Life Assembly of God Church in Henryetta. Numerous volunteers were on hand, in addition to Post officers, who assisted in the distribution for the military veterans and veteran dependents. Journal/Democrat General Manager named OPA President
Shauna Belyeu, General Manager of the Eufaula Indian Journal and the McIntosh County Democrat, was named president of the Oklahoma Press Association during its annual convention held Friday and Saturday, June 7-8, at the Sheraton Hotel in Oklahoma City. She will serve a one-year term, replacing out-going president Sheila Gay, publisher of the Woodward News.
4-H summer campers have fun in the outdoors at Deep Fork
Okmulgee 4-H held their Outdoor Camp on May 30 at Deep Fork Natural Wildlife Refuge. The day was a great success filled with fishing, trapping skills and lessons, outdoor photography and bird watching.
