Friday Night Lights: Week 7 high school football preview
NMSU men, OU women win titles in third annual NB3 Matchplay. It’s been a few weeks since all three local teams were both in action on the same weekend. Over that time, Rio Rancho and Bernalillo both had its bye week, while Cleveland kept plugging along, racking up more wins. The recent competition for the Storm and Rams hasn’t been the strongest, but each team has road matchups against some of the toughest programs in Class 6A. Meanwhile, Bernalillo has a great opportunity to get back to .500 against a winless opponent.

A Little Morning Joy at Academy
The Advocate would like to welcome the new morning bus driver (and retired firefighter), Mark Chavez, to the Academy! Mark drives the Red Charger in the morning and picks up 14 students, one at Explore Academy and the rest at Hyder Park. The Academy started driving a bus last year. Chavez says he wants to bring the kids joy every morning. He wants to keep them safe, and if there is anything that they need to talk about, they can talk to him. He also says, “The best part is just having conversations with the students for a few minutes. Sometimes in the morning they’re kind of quiet, and I think they’re probably still half asleep.” But he always tells them good morning, and they always say “good morning, sir.” Outside of driving the Red Charger, he is a sports official for high school football and basketball, which he has been doing for 30 years. He has officiated many games at Academy. He loves to run up and down the court or field, and he likes being around kids, so he really enjoys it.

More Than Just a Teacher
Albuquerque Academy’s science department welcomes new teacher Lesha Rupert. Rupert has lived in Albuquerque her whole life. She spent her youth with her grandparents, with whom she grew to love New Mexico’s nature, sunsets, food, and people. She studied at Highland High School and then at UNM but was unsure what career path she wanted to pursue within science. Rupert did not originally think she would become a teacher. She tried working in labs, shadowing doctors, and even working at a vet clinic. After university, she went to a meeting at UNM’s College of Education. The experience of this meeting made Rupert realize she wanted to become a science teacher. She enjoys watching students grow and learn while being their mentor.
