Zebra mussels found in Lake Menomin
MENOMONIE, Wis. (WEAU) - The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources notified the City of Menomonie that zebra mussels, an invasive species, have been found in Lake Menomin. According to a news release from the City of Menomonie, zebra mussels impact plankton and algae populations, which can harm fish populations in bodies of water. They avoid eating blue-green algae which can increase toxical algal blooms.
Memorial Benches honor former Elmwood residents
ELMWOOD, WI – On Monday, April 22, 2024, two memorial benches were unveiled in the Village of Elmwood in honor of two former residents and dedicated community members, Joanne Baier and Marybeth Tschumperlin. The Elmwood Area Community Club facilitated the design and placement of the benches that will honor the memory of Joanne and Marybeth.
Softball squad drops pair of conference games
SPRING VALLEY, WI – The spring season has hit full swing, which means two, three and sometimes four games in one week for many sports, but especially softball and baseball. The Spring Valley softball team had some tough competition here last week with teams from the top half of the conference coming for a visit to Valley. Elk Mound (3-2 in D-SC) and Durand (2-3) both came into their respective games with the Cardinals looking to improve their standing (3rd and 5th in the conference respectively). The Cardinals dropped to 1-5 in conference play, 3-6 overall with the pair of losses, leaving them in seventh place in the conference.

Ex Eleva chief guilty of DUI
The former chief of police for the village of Eleva has been convicted of first-offense driving under the influence. Patrick McKillip, 54, of Chippewa Falls, has had his driver’s license revoked for six months and is required to attend alcohol assessment and classes on driver safety following his conviction last Tuesday. He was also fined $199 and is required to pay court costs of $699. A second traffic offense, of having blood alcohol levels above the legal limit of .08 but below 0.15, was dismissed.
Gov. Evers stops in Menomonie to fill potholes
MENOMONIE — Gov. Tony Evers hopped out of a car, pulled on his workman’s gloves, and looked down at a tiny pothole on the road. “Is that the one?” he asked the crowd, drawing a laugh. Evers helped fill several potholes over a quarter-mile stretch of Dairyland Road on the south side of Menomonie on Monday. No one is hurt after Eau Claire fire
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) - No one is hurt after a house fire on the North side of Eau Claire Saturday evening. According to the Eau Claire Fire Department, the fire happened on on Monroe Street around 5:50 p.m. Crews responded to a fire in the garage of a home and those inside were told to evacuate. When responders arrived, smoke and fire could be seen coming from the garage. There were no reported injuries.
