We all know that commuter rush hour traffic in Dundalk and Sparrows Point has been seriously impacted by the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. I have received your phone calls and emails about the traffic issues, and I have experienced it first-hand.

This is a traffic nightmare that goes beyond our district, as it is all over the Baltimore Metropolitan area. It will only worsen once the Port of Baltimore becomes fully operational.

I have contacted the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) requesting the usage of the turnaround under the Key Bridge.

The turnaround was not damaged by the collapse and MDOT stated it has been using the U turn recently on a limited basis. Hopefully that will get some trucks off our local roadways as they will once again be able to use Broening Highway to I-695 North to get to Sparrows Point and I-95 North.

That will alleviate some of the traffic problems, but we need to address the financial impact the traffic is having on commuters who are spending more money on gas and extra time.

I have written a letter to Governor Moore asking him to convene a task force to look for solutions to alleviate the traffic problems in our area. I have suggested alternative work hours for port operations in Baltimore.

We should also promote working at home and alternative working hours for all government agencies and businesses that can comply.

This is going to be a long-term traffic issue and we need to address this as soon as possible.

I will keep you updated on all traffic correspondence with MDOT and the governor’s office.
