Worcester Developer Was on Guard After $9,000 Scam Email

A Massachusetts developer received an email demanding $9,000 in fees he had already paid for an Auburn commercial project. He was immediately on guard. Robert Branca received the fraudulent message concerning his Auburn project, according to reporting by the Worcester Business Journal. The email purported to come from an Auburn town planner and used the subject line “481 Washington Street – Site Plan Approval,” demanding payment for permit fees Branca said he had already settled. The sender address was [email protected] — close enough to pass a glance, but not a government domain. Branca was immediately on guard and had already paid the required fees.

Worcester bankruptcy lawyer, civic leader J. Robert Seder dead at 86

WORCESTER – J. Robert Seder, a prominent Worcester bankruptcy lawyer who chaired many influential city institutions over a lengthy career, has died at 86. Seder, “a mentor to many and a man who never met a stranger,” died Thursday, Nov. 5, his family wrote in an obituary that highlighted his extensive career in law and civil service. “If he could help you, he would. And he tried to help everybody,” Julie A. Seder, one of his three children, told the Telegram & Gazette Saturday, Nov. 7. In addition to a 60-year law career in business and bankruptcy, Seder was a founder of the former Commonwealth National Bank of Worcester and led some of the city’s most influential institutions over the years. He chaired the Worcester Regional Research Bureau, Worcester Business Development Corp. and Worcester Human Rights Commission, and served as president of the Jewish Healthcare Center and Jewish Federation of Central Massachusetts.
