Commissioners court members during their April regular term meeting on April 10 unanimously approved a resolution “honoring Del Rio High School sophomore Kailyn Lomas for winning the 105 weight class state championship” and a group of other high school athletes and their coach.

The source of a loud ‘boom’ heard across Del Rio and into parts of the county Tuesday remains a mystery. Val Verde County Sheriff Joe Frank Martinez said he personally received “dozens” of calls shortly after the loud sound echoed across north Del Rio about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
NEWS — Laughlin student pilot ID’ed as man struck by train
A 24-year-old student pilot stationed at Laughlin Air Force Base has been identified as the man struck and killed by a train on railroad tracks south of Del Rio early Tuesday. Val Verde County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Gina Garcia, who heads the sheriff’s office criminal investigations division, today identified the deceased as 2nd Lt. James Mwailenge Chitika, 24, of Atlanta, Ga., a student pilot stationed at Laughlin Air Force Base.

Val Verde Sheriff’s Office investigators are still working to identify a man believed to have been killed when he was struck by a train south of Del Rio early Tuesday. Lt. Gina Garcia, who heads the sheriff’s office criminal investigations division, told the 830 Times today the sheriff’s office patrol division was notified about the incident at 1:59 a.m. Tuesday.
