We Dance Our Prayers: Ronan Stake hosts tribal performances, workshops
The Ronan Stake Relief Society invited speakers and performers from local tribes to present stories and crafts from their cultures on Nov. 1 at the Ronan Performing Arts Center, followed by workshops at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meeting house. Much of the stake lies within the reservation boundaries of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Stake President Adam Smith said he approved the One Community program “to strengthen the bonds of understanding with our indigenous neighbors, inviting them to share their deeply held values.” The keynote talk, "Similarities Between the Salish and Christian Communities," was given by Myrna Dumontier, who is both a Christian and a Salish Knowledge Keeper. “Our traditions have come to us by various paths,” she said, “but our hearts are joined by love.” She told stories of the ways that parents and grandparents and aunts and uncles instilled in her a respect for the sacred, which was bound up with family and others. “We were taught to be silent and listen and observe,” she said, "living amid all of creation with gratitude, with humility, with generosity.” She remembers her grandmother “calling us to the fire” and “teaching us her ways of finding

Port Polson Players launch season with "out-of-this-world" premiere
The Port Polson Players kick off their 51st season with a regional premiere and out-of-this-world production of “Closer.” The new play by Teresa Hu is part two of the Route 66 Trilogy, loosely based on the 1951 hit movie, “The Day The Earth Stood Still.” The production features 20 Mission Valley performers. The play is set in the Crash Site Nightclub on the outskirts of Tucumcari, New Mexico, where up-and-coming folk singer Reena McKenna encounters a mysterious stranger after hours, following a worldwide UFO scare. She must first determine if the stranger is an alien from another world, which is closer than we think. Ultimately, Reena – and the audience – must decide if his message will indeed determine the fate of the entire planet. With its mix of comedy, drama, mystery, magic and wholesome wisdom, critics call the show “boldly provocative.” The timing is also otherworldly, noted director Neal Lewing, “especially given that several alien sightings have recently been reported across the nation.” "We are beyond excited to kick off the Players' 51st season with this show, and have the perfect cast for it," he added. “Closer” plays at Polson’s Log Theatre on the Lake at 7 p.m. Fridays

Photos: Somewhere over the Rainbow Connection
Whitefish Legacy Partners celebrated the opening of a new Whitefish Trail section, the Rainbow Connection, between Murray and Rainbow Lakes on Sunday. The additional 1.6 miles of single-track trail connects to the overarching Beaver Lakes area Whitefish Trail system. Previously, trail users would have to loop around on Beaver Lakes and Beaver Lease Roads to connect parts of the trail, but now it can be done all on single-track, with a view. At the top of the Rainbow Connection, there is an overlook bench that offers sweeping views stretching from Murray Lake to Glacier National Park in the distance. The hill that the Rainbow Connection is built on has been logged in recent decades and is fairly clear and expansive. The vision for the trail section has been in the works for many years. From scouting and mapping out the ridgeline, to grant writing, to building a new sign, to local donors contributing bit by bit to bring the trail together, Jedd Sankar-Gorton, Legacy Partners programs director, said that the section is an amazing example of “many people owning a trail.” Angus Matheson, a local trail builder, put in long hours to ensure the trail would be completed on time
