Coming off a string of four road losses, Dripping Springs High School Lacrosse rebounded in a big way last week to defeat visiting 2023 Class B State Champion Westwood High School and 2023 Class C State Champion Alamo Heights High School. In the Westwood win, Drip Lacrosse’s Senior Attackman Kyle Parker set the single season scoring record. Hammer Practice Players of the Week were Senior Defensive Midfielders Dylan Reeves and Deacon Ivey.
Versus Westwood The Westwood matchup was a last minute, mid-week addition to the schedule. Westwood scored first but Drip quickly followed. Drip then ripped off six in the second period to leap ahead. Senior face-off midfielder Brandon Magat had good competition but won 10 of 16 face-offs, giving Drip a possession edge.
Parker took full advantage of Drip possession opportunities against Westwood. In doing so, he broke the previous Dripping Springs Lacrosse single season scoring record of 58 goals, set in 2022 by Aiden Kane. By the time the week was over, Kyle would set the new bar at 67 (and still counting).
Drip ended up with a 14-6 win over Westwood on Wednesday night. In addition to Parker, junior attackman Brady Taylor was a significant contributor with three goals and two assists. Other notable scorers included senior midfielder Truman Householder (2G), junior attackman AJ Deer (1G, 2A), senior long stick midfielder Noah Chomout (1G), junior Dominic Bruni (1G), Ivey (1G), and senior face-off midfielder Lucas Willingham (1G).
Versus Alamo Heights Entering last Saturday’s game as Class C State Champion and accruing an 8-1 overall record so far this year, Alamo Heights looked formidable. Drip didn’t flinch, though, putting together one of their most complete games of the year.
The first half was a low scoring affair with the Drip defensive scheme frustrating Alamo Heights. It was rare for Alamo Heights to break Drip’s stingy defensive perimeter. Routinely, Alamo Heights found itself running out of shot clock, being forced to take poor shots from far out. And when they could, junior goalie Shane Roberts was making the save.
The Drip offense, led by Parker (4G), Willingham (1G, 1A), Walls (1G), Deer (2A) and Bruni (1A), picked up their intensity in the second half. A late Alamo Heights goal would result in a tie, forcing overtime.
In sudden death, Drip took advantage of one final Magat face-off win. Deer took possession and then quickly dished to wide-open Willingham who didn’t hesitate to step down from mid-distance. His shot landed just inside of the left post: Game over. Drip won, 6-5.
The last game of the regular season is at home on Friday, April 19, against Regents. A win will put Drip in the Class B state playoffs.
