NYC teachers say phone ban in classrooms has caused ‘jaw dropping’ change in students’ attention

May 15 marks one year since Governor Kathy Hochul enacted a “bell-to-bell” ban on personal phones in public schools, impacting almost a million children in K-12 public and charter schools across the state. Teachers who spoke to The Post all say the ban has had an overwhelmingly postive impact on their schools. “I think that the cell phone ban has been remarkable,” Dr. Jessica Chock-Goldman, director of clinical services at Bard High School Early College of Manhattan on the Lower East Side, told The Post. “I’ve been astounded by how much of a shift it has been.” Jessica Chock-Goldman said she saw kids playing cards in the hallway recently. Courtesy photo “Kids actually talk to each other in school. They sit in the hallway, they engage, they laugh, they study. They play games,” she said. “I actually saw a card game in the hall recently, which was jaw dropping. I’ve been working in schools now for 12 years, and I have never seen that.” As the school year comes to a close, teachers tell The Post that their students appear totally transformed. Before the ban, 8th grade social studies teacher Michael Simmon says it felt like “you could be in

Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral control of NYC schools in jeopardy as tensions rise with Hochul, NYS budget

Their relationship is spinning out of control. A four-year extension of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s control over city schools could be in jeopardy as tensions rise with Gov. Kathy Hochul, insiders revealed. Mayoral control over schools could be reduced to two years or dropped altogether, according to four sources close to the talks. A four-year extension of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s control over city schools could be in jeopardy as state budget negotiations race towards a finish over the next two weeks. Matthew McDermott for NY Post The rumored change came as Mamdani last week tried to squeeze more dough out of Albany, effectively refusing to accept several victories that an increasingly peeved Hochul handed him in his quest to close the city’s projected $5.4 billion budget shortfall. “She holds the cards. She has the tools. What Mamdani doesn’t understand is that the city is a ward of the state and the governor has ultimate control over what the city does,” longtime Democratic consultant Hank Sheinkopf told The Post. Since 2002, New York City’s public schools have been under mayoral control – which gives direct responsibility over the schools to the mayor instead of an often slow-to-act school board.

Governor Hochul Celebrates CUNY And SUNY Community Colleges On The Heels Of National Community College Month

On the heels of National Community College Month, Governor Kathy Hochul today celebrated enrollment gains across the City University of New York’s and State University of New York's community colleges — rebounding from the COVID-19 pandemic and together welcoming 24,100 additional students in the past three years. The increase in enrollment shows the early success of the Governor’s CUNY and SUNY Reconnect program which offers free community college for students between the ages of 25 and 55 pursuing degrees in high-demand fields and the landmark expansion of New York State’s Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) for part-time students. In its first year, CUNY and SUNY Reconnect enrolled over 12,000 eligible students.
