USPS rescinds closure of South Side Drug Store’s postal kiosk after community launches petition calling for reversal
OTTUMWA, Iowa - South Side Drug Store’s postal kiosk will remain open after locals launched a petition against the substation’s pending closure. Pharmacy co-owner Eric Carlson told Tri-State Trusted News that he received a call from a Colorado-based USPS official on the morning of Sept. 25 — the morning after we aired our initial story about residents’ concerns. Carlson told us USPS notified him of the pharmacy’s postal kiosk’s scheduled closure back in June and was told it was part of a larger push to shut down smaller post substations. He cited concern that the cost-savings of closing their kiosk — which they receive about 32 cents an hour to run each month — wouldn’t outweigh the inconvenience to customers, especially older ones who usually handle their postal needs while picking up medication.
