Majority of Employees at Emporia Rehabilitation and Healthcare Seek to Remove SEIU Union
A majority of employees at Emporia Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Emporia, Virginia, have petitioned the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) for a secret ballot vote to remove the Workers United Mid Atlantic Regional Joint Board union from their workplace. A decertification election has been scheduled for Thursday, May 16. Emporia employee Christy Smith filed the petition requesting the vote with free legal aid from the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation.
Man arrested after Halifax County armed robbery, sheriff says
ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. (WNCN) — A suspect was arrested hours after an armed robbery happened on Friday, according to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office. On Friday, the sheriff’s office said they were notified of an armed robbery that happened at a convenience store in Roanoke Rapids. Deputies arrived at the store, checked on the victims and secured the scene.
City sets deadline for FY23 audit
The City of Emporia has set a due date for the fiscal year 2023 audit, agreeing to stipulations laid out in a letter signed by auditor Tyrone Brown. The letter says that Brown & Company CPAs and Management Consultants, PLLC will deliver an audit of Emporia’s financial statements and business-type activities for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2023 by June 24, 2024. The letter further states that Brown will take a 3% pay cut for every three business days after that deadline the audit is not completed. The cost for Brown’s services is not to exceed $55,000 plus a maximum travel fee of $6,000.

The South Hill Rotary Club will be selling flags to honor heroes as part of their "Fill the Field with Flags" fundraising project. The ten foot flag poles with a 3 x 5 flags will be proudly displayed on the corner of Highway 58 and Peebles Road in front of Discount Furniture Store between Memorial Day through July 4, 2024. You can sponsor a flag to honor or in memory of military or emergency first responders or anyone that is a hero in your life. . The flags will have personalized memorial flag medallions with the South Hill Rotary Clubs name and the name of the person being honored. You can sponsor a flag for $50 the first year and can take the flag at the end of the display time frame or you can have the club store it for you and if you choose to use it again the next year the cost is $25 for renewal. Proceeds support the local Rotary projects. Please have checks and forms in by May 20, 2024.
