Over the weekend the Dobson Spring Folly was held at Dobson Square Park with rides, games, vendors, and food. Throughout early afternoon on Saturday, the sun darted in and out from behind the clouds before breaking through and staying put for some time. That allowed youngsters to ride the carnival rides to their heart’s, but at times not their stomach’s, content.

R&D Amusements had rides set up and bounce houses for the kids while food and craft vendors wrapped around the perimeter for those who did not want to be whipped about on a spinning carnival ride.

The food trucks were doing a brisk business on Saturday as members of the Dobson Fire Department were showing off their gigantic ladder trucks on West Atkins Street. Vice chair of the Surry County Commissioner Mark Marion was schmoozing with constituents while walking with his wife Sara through the vendors along South Crutchfield Street.

Wendy Robb sat and watched as her kids spun around on the Paratrooper and laughed when asked if she might be getting on a ride. She said, “That’s for the kids, honey. I am too old for that!”

She said her family was down from Virginia for the day visiting family in Surry County and they had not planned to stop at the Folly. However, she said, “My daughter saw the carnival rides, and there was nothing else on her mind after seeing that.”

That seemed an easy enough itch for Robb as her kids scooted off to ride the ride again, she retreated to one of the picnic shelters to find a place to sit down.

If the goal is to Discover Dobson as marketing materials suggest, events like the Spring Folly, the upcoming Second Annual Ground Steak Festival on June 8 as well as all things sonker are giving folks new reason to stop in the county seat and take another look at what the Town of Dobson and her people have to offer.

As tourism in Surry County continues to grow, Dobson officials have also been working to solidify their town as a welcoming place for people to visit for food, shopping, the Farmer’s Market, live music, wineries, and the Sonker Trail. Add to those the natural beauty of the area including Fisher River Park and river accesses and Dobson shows there is more to discover than even some county residents may be aware.
