Game of the Week: Old rivals Frenship, Lubbock-Cooper open 2026 season
This time, it counts. The first week of the high school football regular season is upon us, and there are plenty of intriguing matchups to get started. Here's a look at the best games in the Lubbock area in Week 1. GAME OF THE WEEK Frenship at Lubbock-Cooper 7 p.m. Friday, Pirate Stadium The similarities between these programs are hard to miss. Once the flag-bearing high schools of their school districts, Frenship and Lubbock-Cooper each have had to deal with recent additions. The impact on football success is still playing out, but there's no arguing the new schools have depleted roster sizes. Look no further than Frenship's drop to Class 5A. Disparities in enrollment haven't held back competitiveness in this rivalry, anyhow. Three of the past five meetings have been one-point games, including the Pirates' 57-56 overtime win last season. That snapped the Tigers' four-game winning streak in the rivalry. This year's teams are are both breaking in plenty of new faces. The quarterbacks will each be new, with Cooper starting someone other than Ryan Rodriguez for the first time since 2022. As much as things change, an intense game between these two should stay the same. Week 1 games
