New Detroit Speakeasy to Travel Back to Harlem Renaissance

Something retro and timeless is secretly developing in Detroit at 19566 Grand River Ave . Miss Eva’s Speakeasy , slated to open later this summer, will feature unique live music experiences and finely crafted cocktails in a Harlem-Renaissance setting.

The project is a tribune to owner Jay Williams ‘ grandmother, Eva Marie Franklin, who was affectionately referred to as “Miss Eva.”

“She came to Detroit from Gadsden, Alabama in the early 1940’s searching for inclusion in the American dream.  She and my grandfather were the first entrepreneurs I knew.” Williams told What Now Detroit in an email. “This project is dedicated to her.  Her aesthetic, and the vibes of the in-home parties Detroiters frequented in the Harlem Renaissance period and throughout the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s will be found in the Miss Eva’s Detroit brand and business concept.”

With over 25 years of experience in business operations managing complex models and leading teams for large construction and corporate social responsibility programs, Miss Eva’s will be Williams’ first attempt at the hospitality industry. Meanwhile, world-renowned jazz musician and executive producer Mike Monford serves as the music director and will select local and nationally recognized musicians, poets, artists, and performers to fill the venue’s performance calendar.

“Our mission is to reignite Detroit’s live music scene providing a new, different, and distinctive listening experience that will remind folks of a time when good, quality live music lived in intimate venues across our city. Miss Eva’s is a love letter to both Detroit and my grandmother by marrying the best of both worlds: A Detroit-style listening experience at everyone’s favorite venue – grandma’s house.” Williams said in the email.

Miss Eva’s will feature a cocktail menu that celebrates Black culture in America by “showcasing ingredients and stories that are unique to the African American experience throughout the history of this country,” including West African plants and ingredients, as well as Black-owned and Detroit-based spirits, beer and wine brands. The drink menu will be refreshed by the season and Miss Eva’s stories will be told alongside the beverages when possible.

In addition to music, Miss Eva’s will also feature “poetry, art, storytelling, and many other unique, artistic ventures,” according to Williams. Those wishing to follow along the journey and be the first to receive updates should follow Miss Eva’s on Instagram or Tik Tok at @missevasdetroit.
