Effingham County votes to hire firm to oversee Phase 1 of data center

Effingham County commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday selecting Charles Abbott Associates Inc. (CAA) to provide services including civil and site review, building and structural review, preconstruction coordination and construction inspections for the first phase of Project Camellia, the massive data center development planned for the Rincon area. "There was discussion at earlier meetings about hiring outside representatives with substantial more depth and experience (than county officials) in reviewing large industrial projects like the one that's going to be here," said Effingham County Manager Tim Callanan during the meeting. "Staff looked at options to find somebody who has experience in dealing not just with large industrial projects, but with large industrial data center projects. We did look at other firms that do something similar, but nothing comes close to the scope that we found with Charles Abbott." Commissioner Beth Helmly asked CAA what issues the company has previously encountered with projects like data centers that have caused the most frustration and controversy. Yura Corporation to open manufacturing facility in Chatham County

Tier 1 automotive supplier Yura Corporation is investing $5 million and creating 55 jobs in Chatham County. The company announced Tuesday that it will open a manufacturing facility in Bloomingdale to produce wiring harnesses and electronic modules for Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America, according to a press release from the Savannah Economic Development Authority. “Yura Corporation is a leader in the development and manufacturing of automotive wiring harnesses, electronic control modules and eco-friendly auto parts, and we are excited they have chosen Chatham County for this first Southeast location," said Savannah Economic Development Authority President and CEO Trip Tollison. "As they begin operations here, we look forward to building a lasting partnership and helping support their continued growth and investment in Chatham County.” The Bloomingdale site will be Yura's first in Georgia. Hilton Head Island’s long-awaited Aldi grocery store has been built and is on track to open soon. The Town of Hilton Head’s Design Review Committee approved building the Aldi on a three-acre plot within Sea Turtle Marketplace in early 2025. It’s located on the north end of the Island at 80 Matthews Dr., off William Hilton Parkway. Since then, construction crews have built the Aldi building and added a parking lot on its east side. The interior appears furnished and the Aldi logo stands above the door. Here’s what we know about when it will open: When will Aldi open? The Island Packet contacted Aldi about when the Hilton Head location will open. Aldi responded with a statement from Thomas Sachtler, the grocer’s regional vice president. “We are happy to confirm our first Hilton Head store, located at 80 Mathews Drive, is on track to open in the coming months,” Sachtler wrote in the statement. “We’ll be sure to stay close as more information is made available regarding the store’s opening date and Grand Opening celebrations.” Although an opening date is not yet set, Aldi is hiring employees for the Hilton Head location. Georgia Power continues coastal grid enhancement work with upgrade to Tybee Island infrastructure

As part of an ongoing effort in Coastal Georgia to strengthen and reinforce the grid, Georgia Power will begin a major project to upgrade powerlines and poles on Tybee Island, improving reliability and increasing the storm resiliency of infrastructure serving thousands of customers on the island. The project will strengthen the existing power delivery system by replacing select poles with a mix of wood, modular composite, and self-supporting concrete to better withstand high winds and severe weather. Power lines will also be upgraded to improve service and enhance reliability. The project is focused on reinforcing existing infrastructure and does not expand the electric grid on Tybee Island. The first phase of the project is scheduled to begin within the next week and will focus on the south end of the island. Areas where work will take place include Butler Ave. from 6th St. to 18th and power lines along connecting streets. Work will also happen along Inlet Ave. and Chatham Ave. This phase is scheduled to be completed in January of 2027. The project’s second phase will tentatively begin in early November on the northeast side of the island focused on infrastructure along and near 2nd Ave., Wrenwood Dr., Solomon
