U.S. Forest Service prescribes burn to promote growth in Chequamegon Nicolai National Forest
IRON RIVER, Wis. (Northern News Now) - Residents near Iron River, Wis. may have seen some extra smoke in the sky the past few days but the fires that caused it were planned. U.S. Forest Service crews lit a prescribed burn on 900 acres of the Chequamegon Nicolai National Forest on Monday. It was the area’s second-ever prescribed burn.

Eveleth, Minn. - Minnesota North College will host a series of camps this summer. The free camps are available to students over the age of 16. Funding for the programs comes from the federal Carl Perkins Grant for Career and Technical Education. The EMS Camp is in June, followed by the welding camp in July and the graphic design and visual communications boot camp in August. Camps range in length from one day to five days.

Ashland residents may see a higher than expected water rate increase in the coming months. The Public Service Commission plans to implement a higher rate increase than the city is comfortable with. The PSC is the regulatory agency for all water utilities in Wisconsin, limiting local control of utility rates. The Butternut/Mercer girls softball team traveled to Port Wing on Monday to take on the South Shore Cardinals in a Northern Lights Conference matchup. The Northland College 2023-24 mens and womens sports programs came through with a hefty cumulative grade point average of 3.25/4.0, and it was the smart performance of the LumberJills volleyball team leading the way with a mark of 3.71. A Bad River Tribal member is seeking retribution for damages to his drone that was shot down two years ago. UW-Superior holds survey for ideas at Head of the Lakes fairgrounds
SUPERIOR, Wis. (Northern News Now) - The Head of the Lakes fairgrounds in Superior is asking residents for ideas they want to see in the future. From racing and rodeos to live music and group events, the fairgrounds host events year-round, but it can put a lot of wear and tear on the grounds. That’s why the University of Wisconsin Superior (UWS) was asked by Douglas County to create an assessment for people to share their thoughts on this public space.
Local 4-H member receives scholarship
The Wisconsin 4-H Foundation announced Thursday its scholarship recipients. The sole Bay Area 4-H member to receive a scholarship was Washburn’s Brian Maki. He is the recipient of the Harold and Irene Hendrickson Memorial Scholarship. Maki was one of three 4-H members to be awarded the $2,500 scholarship. The Wisconsin 4-H Foundation awards scholarships annually to Wisconsin students pursuing higher education. Scholarship recipients are selected based on demonstrated personal growth, development and leadership, academic performance and future educational goals. This year over $20,000 in scholarships were awarded, according to a news release.
