Lakeside’s Phil Becraft and Deerfield’s Landon Brattlie spent the first five innings trading zeros.

When the Demons went to the bullpen, the Warriors pounced.

Lakeside’s baseball team put together a four-run rally in the sixth inning and Becraft pitched a two-hit shutout with seven strikeouts in Monday’s 4-0 home win over Deerfield in nonconference action.

Lakeside, which stranded the bases loaded in the fourth, jumped all over reliever Aiden Brown in the sixth. Aidan Berg was hit by a pitch to open the frame and Thomas Dwyer advanced his pinch runner Haydenn Schoenherr to third with a single. Tyler Chopp then lined a run-scoring single to right. After Logan Schwab bunted for a hit, Owen Marty singled home a pair on a chopper to left field. Schwab capped the scoring by coming across on a wild pitch.

Becraft took a perfect game into the fifth before Brown singled with two outs. Lakeside’s lefty struck out the side in the seventh to end it for the Warriors (9-3), who have won four straight.

“Phil was outstanding on the mound,” Lakeside baseball coach Jake Ziel said. “He attacked hitters early and mixed his pitches well all game. It was fun to watch him pitch in a rhythm for most of the game.

“Our defense made plays when we needed to today. They hit a few balls right on the barrel in some key spots, but our kids made plays.”

Brattlie punched out 13 and walked four over five innings of one-hit ball for the Demons (7-5).

“Offensively, we could not touch Brattlie,” Ziel said. “He was terrific. Our strikeouts have been an issue lately and certainly that is something we need to clean up. Our pitching and defense has been good, but we need to find a way to break out the sticks.”

    THURSDAY’S RESULT

Thomas Dwyer homered and Nolan Meis pitched a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts as Lakeside’s baseball team completed a season sweep of Poynette by winning 10-0 in five innings at home on Thursday, April 25.

Thomas Dwyer singled in the second inning and scored on his brother Crandon Dwyer’s RBI single. Thomas Dwyer then sent an 0-2 pitch from starter Justin Wells over the fence in right field for a two-out two-run blast in the second inning.

“Thomas hit an opposite field home run in the second,” Lakeside baseball coach Jake Ziel said. “Having him back and healthy is a huge addition to our lineup.”

Lakeside (8-3, 2-1 in conference) enacted the 10-run rule with a seven-run fifth, which included a two-run single by Meis and run-scoring single from Aidan Berg.

Meis walked one and allowed just a single, throwing 44 of his 65 pitches for strikes.

“Nolan was aggressive with his pitches and did a great job of getting ahead of hitters, which was a huge part of his success,” Ziel said. “He and catcher Billy Gibson did a great job of mixing pitches and keeping hitters off balance.

“Our pitching has been great to start this season. Offensively, we are still figuring things out and working on making more consistent hard contact.”

    TUESDAY’S RESULT

POYNETTE — Lakeside Lutheran erupted to the tune of eight sixth-inning runs to break a scoreless tie, charging past Poynette 10-0 in Capitol North baseball on Tuesday, April 23.

Lakeside starter Aidan Berg pitched a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts, one walk. He threw 81 pitches, 59 for strikes.

“Aidan was in control from the get-go and kept getting us quick innings,” Lakeside baseball coach Jake Ziel said. “Our bats took awhile to get going, but we felt good with Aidan out there. He was terrific.”

Neither side threatened offensively until the sixth, when the Warriors (7-3, 1-1 in conference) sent 14 hitters to the dish and strung together six of their 10 hits for the game.

Berg led off the proceedings with a single before three straight walks gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead. Crandon Dwyer followed with a run-scoring single, which saw Tyler Chopp also score on an error in right field. Billy Gibson added a two-run double on a line shot to left. After Hayden Schoenherr singled, two runs came across when Poynette pitcher Hunter Wells committed an error fielding Philip Becraft’s bunt. Thomas Dwyer capped the rally with a run-scoring single.

“We finally broke through in the sixth,” Ziel said. “Crandon had a big RBI single and Billy’s two-run double gave us the big hit we needed.”
