Alternative internet plans for Miami Valley residents

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — As the Affordable Connectivity Program is coming to an end, residents across the Miami Valley will have to seek alternatives to internet access.

According to the Federal Communications Commission, April is the last month the ACP, a government-funded affordable internet program, will be in operation.

2 NEWS has gathered a list of different options area residents can choose from.

altafiber

Cincinnati-based Altafiber, formerly Cincinnati Bell, offers a lower-priced plan for customers. Eligible Miami Valley residents can receive discounts on internet or telephone services.

AT&T

AT&T offers Access from AT&T, a “low-cost” service to customers for internet service. Depending on the maximum internet speed available, the price is $30 per month.

Customers will not incur an annual contract, deposit or equipment fees, according to AT&T.

Individuals qualified for the internet program are SNAP recipients, have a temporary income or are enrolled in the National School Lunch Program.

Metro by T-Mobile

Current customers on the ACP through Metro by T-Mobile will have $15 per month reduced from their bill in June. The $15 per month reduction will end in August.

Metro by T-Mobile asks for you to keep your ACP line active to receive the discount.

Spectrum

Spectrum provided 2 NEWS with information below of what customers should know:

“Spectrum will assist households with the post-ACP transition, including offering 50% ACP subsidy in May, continuing connectivity savings of $30+ per month for a year with Spectrum Mobile and a variety of Spectrum Internet plans designed to help our customers stay connected while meeting their individual needs and budgets,” Spectrum said.

“For customers losing their ACP benefit from another provider, they can call Spectrum or visit one of our local Spectrum stores to find out about their options for staying connected and saving money with Spectrum Internet and Spectrum Mobile,” a statement from Spectrum said.

For residents that have been removed from ACP, Lifeline with Spectrum may be available.

T-Mobile

Project 1Million is offered by T-Mobile for students. Eligible children can have access to a digital hotspot and and 100GB of data for no cost for five years.

Verizon

Verizon offers Verizon Forward, an internet plans starting at $20. Eligible customers can see their rate lowered to just $0 per month for six months.

“Verizon is committed to providing households with access to high-quality connectivity and reliable home internet without data caps, and does not believe that income should be a barrier to accessing it.,” said Verizon.

Customers that take advantage of Verizon Forward will the same receive choice, reliability and service, according to Verizon.

Xfinity

Since the ACP is ending, Xfinity is offering the “internet essentials” plan.

Internet essentials allows residents to have affordable, fast and reliable internet access for just $9.95 per month.

Interested individuals must be on an assistance program, not have been an Xfinity internet customer within the past three months (excluding ACP) and have no outstanding debt on accounts created less than one-year.
