Gourmet taco truck favored by former Sacramento Kings player to open Auburn cantina

A popular gourmet taco truck, a personal favorite of former Sacramento Kings point guard De’Aaron Fox, is launching its first storefront. Banzito’s Tacos will open a cantina in the heart of old town Auburn at 216 Washington St. Owner Adam Saldaña said the truck’s signature is its cheese curds on top of its gourmet tacos. Saldaña said his love for cooking can be traced back to his mother. She was an “extravagant host,” inviting family over and having a menu posted on the dining room wall. Food was a passion for her, and as Saldaña helped her in the kitchen, it became his passion too. “Anybody that knows me knows I’ve been cooking my whole life,” Saldaña said. “I always cook for friends, barbecues, potlucks...it just stuck with me.” It wasn’t until the COVID-19 pandemic that his culinary hobby became a possible career. He began experimenting with flavor combinations, everything from green enchilada tacos to grilled bacon-wrapped jalapenos filled with cream cheese. He later took his dishes to farmers markets, and eventually, outside the Golden 1 Center. Banzito’s Tacos caught the eye of Fox, who played for the Kings from 2017 to 2025. Saldaña would later serve his tacos at

Cockroaches and rodent droppings were found at this Land Park seafood restaurant

Sacramento County Health Inspectors gave a red placard to an Arden Arcade Mexican restaurant after finding 175 “fresh” rodent droppings. Additionally, 15 eateries were cited for health food violations ranging from dented cans, slime buildup inside an ice machine and black residue accumulation in the ice cream cooler. What do these inspections mean? While a yellow placard signals two or more major violations, these are typically corrected or mitigated during the inspection, according to the Sacramento County Retail Food Inspection Guide . A red placard, however, signals “imminent danger to public health and safety” and suspends an establishment’s health permit until violations are corrected. This could include, but is not limited to, major vermin contamination . In contrast, a green placard means a restaurant passed inspection. The county performs about 14,000 inspections annually and about 97% of establishments pass, spokesman Ken Casparis previously told The Sacramento Bee. Approximately 1% of inspections result in a closure, he said. These were the results of Sacramento County food facility inspections for Thursday, Oct. 22, through Wednesday, Oct. 28. If an inspection listed below needs clarification, business owners can email The Sacramento Bee at servicejournalists@sacbee.com . How to report a business to the health

California’s November Hike Of The Month Is A Scenic Trail Worth Exploring Before Winter Arrives

A wooden ladder bolted into a fern-filled canyon is the most famous feature of this hike. Beat poets Gary Snyder and Jack Kerouac reportedly climbed down an earlier version of it in the 1950s. The ladder sits beside a creek that tumbles through redwoods on its way to the Pacific.

Dine with the dearly departed at these Sacramento Día de los Muertos dinners

The first two days of November mark Día de los Muertos, a Mexican holiday of remembrance of friends, family and pets who have died. A few Sacramento-area restaurants are welcoming celebrants with special meals and events for the occasion. Cuvée Club, the pop-up bar concept within the Granite Bay location of Mimosa House at 6861 Douglas Blvd., is hosting A Night to Remember on November 1 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. For $75, you’ll get three cocktails or spiked aguas frescas plus unlimited plain aguas frescas and 13 passed bites. Under-21 guests get in for $20 and receive the same refreshments, minus the alcohol. Cocktails include the eponymous Mimosa de los Muertos, sparkling wine with mango, salty-sweet Chamoy on the inside of the glass and a Tajin rim, and La Catrina, a smoky concoction of mezcal with orange, lime and agave syrup, served with a chile-salt rim. Horchata and cucumber-lime aguas frescas, served in plastic bags in the street cart style, can be spiked with tequila. Guests will be greeted with tostilocos, another street food delicacy, Tostitos with jicama, cucumber, peanuts, sweet

Vic's Ice Cream whitewashes mural, causing online backlash in Sacramento neighborhood

Maren Conrad said it was unfortunate a mural she’d painted outside Vic’s Ice Cream in 2021 was painted over Tuesday morning, leaving a blank white wall. But her biggest gripe was a claim that Vic’s made on Instagram that it had attempted to contact her. “I don’t have a single missed phone call, missed voicemail, missed text message, missed email,” Conrad said in a phone interview Wednesday morning. “I mean, I’m not a hard person to get a hold of.” The landmark Land Park ice cream shop – which reopened in January following a change in ownership after the death of longtime owner Craig Rutledge – painted over Conrad’s mural that adorned the outer wall of Brew Bird, a cafe that shares a building with Vic’s. Jason Williams, a hairstylist working across the street Tuesday evening said that the whitewashing happened around 10 a.m. Work that Conrad created across the street as part of the same project appears to have been untouched. But even just the destruction of one mural was enough to cause a stir online. “It took months of planning and thousands of dollars to bring this incredible mural to (Land Park),” wrote Jennifer Madriago-Benton, owner of Artisan
