Sacramento student test scores remain below pre-pandemic levels. See how much
English and math scores in the Sacramento area’s largest school districts, as in California overall, have yet to return to pre-pandemic levels, according to results released this week. California Gov. Gavin Newsom touted student academic progress during the 2025-26 school year Thursday, citing gains in test scores. But the figures his office cited include students who had not reached the proficient or advanced levels, meaning they had not yet met grade-level standards. Fewer than half of students met or exceeded state standards in English language arts and math, and many Sacramento-area schools were no exception. Megan Welsh, an associate professor at UC Davis’ School of Education, said that it was not surprising that students affected by the pandemic were still struggling, given the time they lost in school. “You can’t take away a year of people’s development and expect them to not be permanently altered by that,” Welsh said, while also noting cutoffs between proficiency levels are somewhat arbitrary and don’t account for the margin of error in individual students’ test scores. “The people involved in the decision making might wiggle the score a little bit to change the results, so that it doesn’t look so good or so bad.”

UC Davis to launch one-year master's degree to strengthen teacher workforce
Aspiring teachers will soon be able to earn their master’s degree and teaching credential within one year at the University of California, Davis. The school is launching a new master of education degree and teaching credential program in July 2027. This four-quarter program is replacing the School of Education’s existing six-quarter Master of Arts in education pathway. It will be phased out once current students complete their degrees. Officials said they hoped the shorter length of program would make graduate education more affordable and attainable for those interested in teaching, especially amid long-standing teacher shortages in California. “Teachers are critical to preparing the next generation to learn, grow and succeed,” said Chancellor Gary May. “Our new master’s degree expands access to teacher preparation and helps develop the educator workforce California needs to support student success and strengthen communities across our state.” The program will combine rigorous coursework and mentorship opportunities with hands-on teaching placements in diverse urban, suburban and rural K-12 districts in the Sacramento region, according to its website. Courses will focus on teaching methods, instructional development and educational research. The Master of Education degree — like the Master of Arts in education pathway it is replacing — will
