Central Avenue Overhaul Brings Roundabouts, Bus Lanes—And a $85M Price Tag
Central Avenue is getting a top-to-bottom makeover, and the plan calls for something Twin Cities drivers aren't used to seeing on a state highway: roundabouts. The proposal would rebuild the corridor from the Mississippi River in northeast Minneapolis through Columbia Heights and into Fridley, cutting a general-purpose lane in each direction in some stretches, adding dedicated bus lanes, and replacing several dangerous intersections with circular traffic flow. Columbia Heights' City Council is expected to vote on the project at its Sept. 14 meeting, one of the final approvals needed before the state can move forward.

St. Paul Seniors Say Bronze Line Bridge Could Cost Them Their Homes
Eighty senior citizens living at a St. Paul cooperative near Lake Phalen are asking the Metropolitan Council to scrap a planned bridge that would carry Bronze Line buses within 50 to 60 feet of their windows, warning it could bring constant noise, glaring lights, and a collapse in their home values. The bridge would carry buses and trail users over Johnson Parkway, letting Bronze Line service bypass the busy intersection of Johnson Parkway and Phalen Boulevard, but residents of the Realife Cooperative say the design puts their community's western edge directly in the path of roughly 240 bus trips a day.
