EVENTS: A full house for Paul
Lily’s Apple Pie returns to the Vassalboro Grange, bringing a local playwright’s humor to another generation. When Paul Cates put on a play, Vassalboro showed up. His productions filled the Grange so enthusiastically that, on one occasion, the crowd drew a visit from the fire department. His family remembered the episode in his obituary, a fitting detail for a man who knew how to bring his neighbors together.

Orono’s live band scene might be the best thing since sliced bread
OPINION: It’s no secret that the University of Maine’s party scene is frat-based. On an average Saturday, you can drive through Frat Row and see numerous houses opening their doors to well-hydrated students in search of another reason to sit through five days of school every week. Delta, TKE, Kap Sig, Beta, ATO, ASig and more are frequent student destinations, typically featuring a mix of house music from an amateur DJ and a plethora of pong and die players, sardined in a pseudo-rave room full of freshmen shouting “SO WHAT’S YOUR MAJOR?” It is quintessential and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

This Historic Maine Theater Still Shows Movies The Way It Did Decades Ago
A glowing marquee on a small-town main street can still make movie night feel like an event. Add the smell of real-butter popcorn and a brick theater near the Penobscot River, and the whole scene feels wonderfully old-school. What surprised me most is that this Maine movie house is tied...
