DANBURY– The Northwest Wisconsin ITBEC Tourism Committee has announced that the 2024 Wisconsin Governor’s Fishing Opener will be held in Burnett County on Friday and Saturday, May 3-4, at Yellow Lake near Danbury.

The Wisconsin Governors Fishing Opener exists to raise awareness of the fishing and tourism industries in the state of Wisconsin.

The event brings Wisconsin dignitaries to the area, including the governor and Cabinet secretaries from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Wisconsin Department of Tourism. A main goal of the event is to obtain significant media coverage highlighting the host community and Wisconsin’s fishing and tourism industries. It also provides a fun, outdoor-focused community event.

The event was operated by Wisconsin Indian Head Country, Inc. for several decades. In 2022, the torch was passed on to the Northwest Wisconsin ITBEC Tourism Committee to keep the event alive. More history will be added in the near future.

General Inland Trout season gets underway at 5 a.m. on May 4, running to Oct. 15. General Inland Fishing begins May 4, running to March 2, 2025. Largemouth Bass starts May 4, going to March 2, 2025, and smallmouth bass begins June 15, running to March 2, 2025.

The Governor’s Fishing Opener will kick off Friday with Destination Tours, including the Jordan Buck and Gandy Dancer State Trail, Forts Folle Avoine Historical Park and Northwest Passage Gallery.

Event registration will take place in Siren at Zhashagiius Event Center, followed by a banquet and program.

On Saturday, starting at 6 a.m., there will be a Continental Shore Breakfast, followed by fishing at Yellow Lake. A Governor Knowles State Forest Brickhouse Brewing tour and Burnett Dairy Co-op & Cheese Store tour will take place starting at 8 a.m. Family Fishing Day will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Crooked Lake State Park in Siren. At 1:30 p.m. there will be a Showcase Tour of Siren.
