Lady Vikings win back-to-back games

DANBURY — North Stokes softball team has won back-to-back games with a 14-5 victory over Alleghany on April 15 and an 8-4 win over Mount Airy on April 16.

Coach Randy Mendenhall and the rest of the team celebrated seniors Kinley Mabe and Savannah Watkins before their game against Mount Airy.

The Bears jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning behind four singles and a triple.

North Stokes tied the game in the bottom of the fourth after two outs. Watkins singled with an out and then moved to second after Caroline Mabe was walked. After Emma James flew out to center field, Kandance Woods walked loading the bases for Kinley Mabe. The senior tripled clearing the bases making it 4-3. Mabe knotted the score at 4-4 after scoring on an error by the Bears’ catcher.

The Vikings took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth off the bat of Caroline Mabe. Watkins collected her second hit of the night with two outs, and then Caroline rounded the bases on an infield fence homerun making it 6-4.

Kinley Mabe’s double in the bottom of the sixth inning scored insurance runs from Caroline Mabe and James.

On Monday, the Vikings pounded out 17 hits against the Trojans. Kinley Mabe 4-for-5 with a double, a homerun, and 3RBIs, Caroline Mabe collected two hits including a homerun and 2RBIs, and Rori Long two hits, a homerun, and an RBI. Madelyn Spencer, L Fox, Woods, and Watkins collected multiple hits on the day.

Noth Stokes improved to 8-9 overall and 4-5 in the Northwest 1A Conference. The Vikings will travel to out-of-state rival Patrick County on April 18, and East Wilkes on April 19.
