When one thinks of dollar movie theatres, it is almost a given that typical results would be less than favorable. But Daingerfield’s Morris Twin Cinema is anything but “typical.”

Built in 1949, the Morris Twin Cinema, or Morris Theatre, has remained a family- owned and operated business ever since. Originally built by W.W. McNatt, the theatre remains a source of entertainment for those in the Daingerfield, Lone Star, Hughes Springs are and beyond. McNatt’s grandchildren, Walter and Beverly Bass, continue to operate the family business in downtown Daingerfield.

The Morris Theatre has been open almost daily since it was built, with the exception of part of 2020 when the theatre, along with all others, where forced to close during the height of the coronavirus pandemic. When theatres were allowed to re-open in Texas, Bass ensured there was a steady stream of movies coming in, despite the fact the feature film distributors were not in operation yet. Bass brought in classics, such as Wizard of Oz and Star Wars to give movie goers a break from the pandemic.

Though material and licensing costs have caused the theatre to raise their ticket prices from a dollar to $1.50, the theatre still brings in visitors from all over the area. Many times, Bass will have the opportunity to have new movies on their release date, giving people a cheaper alternative to see the latest blockbusters.

In addition to their low ticket prices, the Morris Theatre also offers affordable snack bar options including hot dogs, candy, drinks, and popcorn. (Some customers will forgo the movie and stop by simply for the popcorn.) A family of four can enjoy a movie, popcorn, and drinks at the Morris Theatre for less than the entry price into some larger market theatres.

The theatre, with its two screens, can seat 250 people. Just recently, the theatre upgraded its downstairs theatre with new, more comfortable seating, which including more handicap accessible areas. The theatre is typically open seven days a week, with varying show times. Current movie selections and showtimes can be seen at www.morristheatre . com or by calling 903645-2219.
