2 Alabama inmates killed, 5 injured in transport van crash

TALLAPOOSA COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — Two inmates were killed and five more were injured when an Alabama Department of Corrections van crashed in Dadeville on Wednesday.

According to the ADOC, inmates Willie Crayton, Jake Jones, Bruce Clements, Thomas Bass, Heath Garrett, Shawn Wasden and Richard Jackson were being taken to the Alex City Community Based Facility when the van they were traveling in crashed on Elder Road. Crayton was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Both Clements and Jones were taken to a local hospital in critical condition for treatment. Clements ultimately died from injuries sustained in the crash, and Jones continues to receive treatment. Everyone else involved in the crash were treated for minor injuries.

ADOC said they will send mental health care professionals to Alex City Community Based Facility to support affected inmates and staff.
