The suspect of Thursday's armed hostage standoff which resulted in the death of one Lafayette police officer and the injury of three officers had his first court appearance Friday morning for outstanding warrants.

Suspect in Lafayette officer shooting had several warrants for his arrest
The suspect in a hostage situation that led to the death of a Lafayette SWAT officer had several felony warrants out for his arrest. Nyjal A. Hurst, 31, was wanted on warrants in Jeanerette for two counts of second-degree aggravated battery and one count of home invasion, said Jeanerette City Marshal Fernest Martin. Hurst was also wanted for armed robbery, illegal use of a weapon, attempted carjacking, domestic abuse/battery and child endangerment by strangulation in St. Mary Parish.

The shooting took place on Hubertville Road near Martin Luther King Drive in Jeanerette. According to KATC, at around 9:00 a.m. Thursday, officials received information that a person, who is now identified as 31-year-old Nyjal Hurst, was inside of a residence located in the 2500 Block of Martin Luther King Drive.
