Hannibal Parks and Recreation to hold ‘Momma Bats and Baby Bats’ night hike Friday
HANNIBAL, Mo. — “Momma Bats and Baby Bats” will be the theme for a night hike through Sodalis Nature Preserve at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 10. The hike will be led by Gale Rublee, interpreter guide at Hannibal Parks and Recreation. Participants will meet at the new Sodalis shelter on Ely Street. The full program will last about two hours and covers a two-mile paved loop with a steep incline, but there are options for a shorter period.
American Legion Riders Chapter 55 poker run Saturday to assist with hats, gloves for Hannibal children
HANNIBAL, Mo. — The American Legion Riders Chapter 55 third annual poker run will be held Saturday, May 11. The poker run will start and end at 3819 Highway MM. Registration will be held at 11 a.m., with the poker run at 12:15 p.m. This ride will be 125 miles, covering Bowling Green and up through Mark Twain Lake to Monroe City and ending at the American Legion in Hannibal. Stops along the route are Southside Bar, Goodfellas, Hitching Post and the Dug Out.
Hannibal man found guilty of burglary, meth charges; could be sentenced to up to 22 years in prison
HANNIBAL, Mo. — A Hannibal man is facing up to 22 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections after being found guilty of three felonies. A jury in Marion County, Mo., on Tuesday, April 30, found Joshua Stevens, 42, of Hannibal guilty of burglary in the first degree, possession of a controlled substance and assault in the fourth degree. Stevens is scheduled to be sentenced on June 18 in Marion County Circuit Court by Judge Rachel Bringer-Shepherd. He could be sentenced to between five and 15 years on the burglary charge and up to seven years on the possession of a controlled substance charge. He could also receive up to one year in the county jail on the assault charge.

Chuck Overton’s music is revitalized as his legacy album is ready for release. Chuck Overton, the legendary alto saxophone player from the band Brainstorm, returned home to Vandalia a little more than a decade ago to enjoy his retirement. But three years ago, Crystal McCurdy with the Vandalia Area Public Library, asked her old school mate to come in for one of the library’s summer programs. Little did Chuck know how much playing for such a young audience would affect him. The library’s programs were designed to bring to life the greater world to Vandalia’s area children.
MCHS golf at Eastern Missouri Conference Tournament
The Montgomery County golf team finished third in the Eastern Missouri Conference tournament on April 22 at Woods Fort Golf Course in Troy. The Wildcats shot a four-player score of 391. Four players earned medals in the tournament. Robby Rodgers led the way with a fifth-place finish and a 94, followed by Wyatt March (eighth, 96), Maddux James (11th, 99) and Karter Reagan (13th, 102). Theo Tate photos.
