Boomer statistics tell the real and sad story
I wrote a letter (Boomers should be ashamed of themselves," May 21, Aspen Daily News) talking about Baby Boomers and I have gotten replies — which is fantastic! Like I’ve said many times before, I love being proven wrong because that’s when I learn the most about myself.
A guide to a summer stuffed with songs in the Roaring Fork Valley
It is 18 miles from Aspen to Basalt. The music that will be played this summer within that stretch, encompassing Aspen, Snowmass and Basalt, rivals any other similar tract in the world. From classical to reggae, opera to bluegrass, rock ‘n’ roll to folk, jazz to hip-hop, electronic to indie...
Planes, trains and automobiles: head in the clouds
Airport this, airport that. We hate change, even changes that could move us toward where we’d like to go. The beauty and comedy of a public forum like this one is iteration and reiteration. We roll our eyes, pick sides, cheer on our favorite scribbling characters and shrink from ambitious concrete suggestions for community improvement.
Don’t let a few private jets decide runway issue
Could widening the runway at the airport be decided by a county vote? Interesting that the $75 million G-650 aircraft needs the runway to be widened to land here. There are 13 of these aircraft owned by Aspen visitors. Is this reason enough?. Robin Ferguson Kelly. Aspen.
Bears, weather provide early challenges at Aspen campgrounds ahead of Memorial Day weekend
The summer camping season is set to start with a bang today, though lingering lousy weather could put a damper on things. Oh yeah, and bears are making conditions interesting as well. Difficult Campground east of Aspen opened on May 13 and there has already been at least one bear trying to access campers and vehicles for food, according to David Boyd, public information officer for the White River National Forest.
Drilling down to the final issues with Whetstone project
Roundabout gets commitment, tap fees still a question mark. What appears to be a concerted and collaborative effort to identify and frame the remaining issues between Gunnison County and the town of Crested Butte over the proposed Whetstone affordable housing project was set in motion Monday, May 20. The county is relying on the town to provide a so-called “will serve” letter promising to extend water and sewer utility services to the project located about two miles south of town. The town has laid out a set of conditions that council members deem important to be part of any agreement for utility services to the project but not all have been finalized. Town also wants adequate time for its consulting engineers to vet any utility extension plan.

Snowboarder Identified Through Social Media Account as Alleged Hit & Run Perpetrator in Aspen, CO
A snowboarder who fled the scene of a collision on Aspen Mountain, Colorado, on February 24, has been identified using his own social media footage and matching it to video surveillance from Silver Queen Gondola. Anne Cassidy was hit from behind on Aspen Mountain by an unknown snowboarder on February...
Titan girls soccer falls in state semifinals
After flying through the first two rounds of the 2A state soccer tournament, the Crested Butte Titans girls soccer season came to an end in the semifinal match losing to the Flatirons Academy Bison 3-2 on Saturday, May 18. The Titans outscored their opponents 13-0 through their first two games...
Past rodeos embodied ‘Old West’ in Aspen
As the Snowmass Rodeo approaches its 50th anniversary, I delved into the history of rodeos in Aspen and discovered a rich past. Aspen High School once had a rodeo team, and the town was home to the Aspen Roping and Riding Club. Additionally, 4-H programs, rodeo queens and courts and...
Straight-shot entrance makes the most sense
A bunch of NIMBYs are campaigning against the “preferred alternative” option for the entrance to Aspen with alternative facts. A friend of a NIMBY opines that the Marolt Open Space is sacred. It has never been sacred. There’s a huge museum, a private house, driveways, parking lots, utility...
Anti-Boomers ought to quit whining, wake up
I am a Baby Boomer, and proud of it. I think the slant of the letter (“Boomers ought to be ashamed of themselves,” May 20, Aspen Daily News) is an Aspen biased view. I, as a Boomer, taught high school for most of my adult life, choosing public service over personal greed. I protested the Vietnam War as a 21-year-old, in Chicago at the Convention and elsewhere.
