Police Make Arrest in Whitley County Church Burglary
The Williamsburg Police Department and Whitley County Sheriff’s Department says officers have made an arrest in a church theft case. Police say 39-year-old Brandon Gonzalez, of Williamsburg, tried to use a check he stole from a church to buy items at Walmart. Gonzalez was taken into custody at his home after a brief foot chase. Police said the incident began when Gonzalez burglarized the Hanging Rock Baptist Church in Whitley County. In addition to stealing a check, police said the church was damaged from Gonzalez breaking in. Police said additional evidence was found at Gonzalez’s home. Gonzalez was served with two bench warrants and was charged with running from police, burglary, possession of burglary tools, criminal possession of a forged instrument and tampering with physical evidence. Gonzalez was lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center.

Pregnant Woman Airlifted to Hospital after Man Using his Phone Rear Ends Her Vehicle
Laurel County Sheriff John Root reports Deputy Bobby Roberts and Deputy Cyruss McVey were called out to a two-vehicle crash on I – 75 approximately 8 miles South of London. Deputies found that a vehicle had ran out of fuel and that a man had attempted to exit the vehicle to push it off the road. Apparently, as he exited the vehicle a car driven by 49-year-old Johnathon Brantley of Florida struck the vehicle in the rear. Brantley admitted to police that he was on his phone and when he looked up he hit the car. The vehicle that was struck was occupied by a woman that was six months pregnant who was injured and had to be airlifted from the scene. Brantley was arrested and charged with driving a motor vehicle using a handheld mobile device, two counts of wanton endangerment and assault. He was lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.

Laurel County Sheriff Warns of Tax Payment Scam
Laurel County Sheriff John Root says a tax payment scam is circulating the area. Scammers are telling people that they must go online or by phone and use a debit card to pay their property taxes. Sheriff Root says the only acceptable means of paying your taxes are by mail using a check or money order, or in person using a check, money order or debit card. The sheriff asks citizens to report any attempt to solicit payments online or by phone. The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate this latest scam.

On Sunday, February 18, 2024, at approximately 1:05 am, Knox County Deputies developed information that a large quantity of Methamphetamine and Fentanyl/Heroin was being delivered to the Corbin area in a gray Dodge Charger. Knox County Deputies and members of the Laurel County Drug Interdiction Task Force located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop on the Cumberland Gap Parkway in Corbin.
