COVINGTON, La. ( WGNO ) — The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office cut the ribbon on its new, 5,500 square foot Third District Patrol Station on Thursday, April 18.

The building will be open 24-7 and will be manned by more than 30 deputies, including some assigned to patrol, traffic and special operations.

Sheriff Randy Smith said the coverage area for the district station will include parts of Madisonville, Covington and Goodbee. In all, according to Smith, more than 54,000 people live in the coverage area and are responsible for more than 1,600 requests for service each month.

“We have easy access to and from the interstate as well as Highway 21,” Smith said to the crowd who attended the ribbon cutting. The district station is located behind the Target store in Covington, so it is close to business and residential developments in the area. It cost $3.7 million to buy the land and construct the building.
