COVENTRY, R.I. (WPRI) — There’s a brand new cat lounge coming to Coventry.
Mad Cats and More , which is nestled next to Borrelli’s Bakery on Tiogue Avenue, is slated to open on April 20.
The family-run cat lounge is the brainchild of Coventry resident Mark Demers. His daughter told 12 News their main goal is to get cats out of cages and into their forever homes.
“We have always loved animals, especially cats,” Jasmine Demers said. “We have six cats at home who are super friendly and love attention.”
The Demers’ two Maine Coon cats, Athena and Zeus, will be the only felines who live at the lounge full-time. The Demers hope to eventually team up with a shelter so visitors can spend time with adoptable cats.
Mad Cats and More will also sell a variety of handmade merchandise for pets and humans alike, including collars, leashes, T-shirts, bracelets and keychains.
It will cost visitors $20 to play with the cats for an hour. Those who opt for a quick visit can instead pay $10 for 30 minutes.
The cat lounge is full of bridges, tunnels, towers, toys and beds. There are also bean bag chairs and a TV that guests can use to watch cat-themed YouTube clips.
The Demers are asking visitors to not chase the cats, pick them up or wake them while they’re napping.
But that doesn’t mean the cats don’t want to be bothered.
“Sometimes they need to warm up to you,” Jasmine explained. “With time, they will come to you, especially if you’re in the cat lounge for an hour.”
The only other cat lounge located in Rhode Island is Bajah’s Cat Café in Tiverton.
