Mannix, Patterson weigh in on proposal to close Salem-Keizer schools
( This story has been updated with additional information ) Oregon state leaders, including Rep. Kevin Mannix, R-Salem,and Sen. Deb Patterson, D-Salem,spoke out on Oct. 19 and 20 against a proposal to close six elementary schools across Salem-Keizer Public Schools. Mannix said he is concerned about the plan to close Cummings Elementary and Englewood Elementary, both in Mannix's House District 21. Patterson said the closures are a "great concern," with four of the six schools in Patterson's Senate District 10. “Cummings and Englewood Elementary are more than just school buildings. They are important parts of their neighborhoods, bringing families together and providing students with a place to learn, grow, and build lasting connections,” said Mannix in a statement. “I will roll up my sleeves and work with the Salem-Keizer School District, parents, and community members to find solutions that will help keep Cummings and Englewood Elementary open.” SKPS on Oct. 9 announced a plan to close Brush College, Candalaria, Cummings, Englewood, Liberty, and Richmond. School officials described the closures as unavoidable, as enrollment continues to decline in the district. Community members slammed the proposed closures during a school board meeting days later.
