An idea for a permanent food truck park is starting to take shape in Sand City.
More than any other city on the Monterey Peninsula, Sand City feels like a place of possibility, somewhere that new ideas can take root and flourish. The latest such idea is something not unlike Night Market 831, a monthly music and art festival in the Sand City Art Park with live music and food trucks. The first Friday of every month since late 2021, the Art Park becomes a crush of people with long lines and not enough places to sit.

If we said there was a night of live music, outdoor patio seating with fire pits and plenty of craft beer, you would say, “How much is this gonna cost?” The answer: Nothing… well, except the beer. Peter B’s Live Music Summer Series is free for all ages (and for dogs, when music plays on the patio). And they host performances every Thursday evening throughout the season. On May 30, the local roots reggae group Coastal Commission plays a mix of current and classic favorites outside, and the band’s motto might as well be “dance, drink and be happy.” The next week, June 6, DJ Fredo sets the beat indoors. Executive Director Julie Packard Takes the Gazette on a Tour of Monterey Bay Aquarium
Sunlight streams through the kelp forest undulating in the salt water behind the glass walls of a famed two-story exhibit. On this April day alone, when some 3,000 visitors will soon step through the doors of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, these blades of kelp — a plant that makes up a vital native marine habitat off our Central California coast — will grow another 3 to 5 inches. This is the kind of fascinating fact millions of visitors have learned from the pioneering aquarium built directly into its habitat, the site of which was once Cannery Row’s largest sardine cannery.
Carmel-by-the-Sea Culinary Week has deals, delicious events, and a pub crawl, too
Deals and special events will pop up during the week+ celebration; over 40 restaurants will take part. THESE MAY GRAY DAYS... remind us that certain Golden State spots really rock a May-Gray-ish aura to the fabulous and atmospheric hilt. They're the coast-close hamlets that possess a particularly storybook panache, and even if they're not particularly foggy or moody each and every day of the softest season, it still feels like these pretty places are more fictional than not. Carmel-by-the-Sea, that ultimate storybook spot, always displays an incredibly quaint character, even if the sun is bright (which, yes, it can be on occasion, even during the cool weeks of late spring). Springtime in Carmel is the perfect moment for a meal-centered celebration, one that pays appetizing homage to the eateries around the picturesque village. In fact, over 40 foodie favorites will take palate-pleasing part in Carmel-by-the-Sea Culinary Week, which begins with a Culinary Week Kick-Off Part at Carmel Plaza on May 31.
