Letter: Save your money, vote no on jail levy

The county’s proposed jail levy will make zero noticeable difference in the amount of flagrant crime and degeneracy in the county. While adding more jail beds would allow the county to hold a larger percentage of criminals in jail until they can make it to court, the criminals missing their court dates is not the problem. The problem is that even if they are eventually convicted, the vast majority of sentences are incredibly light, and those people are going to be back out on the street doing the exact same things almost immediately, anyway.

In short, the problem with the rampant petty crime is the state’s fault, and no amount of money you give the county is going to fix it.

What the proposed leavy would do is take a substantial amount of money out of the citizens’ pockets at a time when families are already struggling. You won’t notice any decrease in the problems that plague our community, but you certainly will notice the fact that you have less money available for yourself as a result of this tax.

Save your money, you’re going to need it. Vote no on Coos County 6-213.
