RSU 21 seeks more bus drivers to avoid route disruptions
KENNEBUNK, Maine — During the past school year, 25 people drove buses throughout the streets of RSU 21 towns, picking up children at their stops, taking them to school, and bringing them home in the afternoon. Everyone worked hard and got the job done, even while making sacrifices and juggling challenges, according to RSU 21 transportation director Chris Pasciuto. But here’s the thing: for everything to run truly smoothly, RSU 21 really needed a full staff of 32 bus drivers, Pasciuto said. Without that full staff, things can happen. “When we don’t have enough drivers . . . parents have to go get their kids or drop them off or find another route,” Pasciuto said. “That’s very disruptive to people. It’s a nightmare.” Pasciuto and the district have been working for months now to recruit new drivers and reach a full staff. Efforts were in full swing back in May, when Pasciuto, human resources director Gwen Bedell, and others had a recruitment table set up outside the Kennebunk Elementary School gym as voters filed in there for the district’s annual budget meeting. And the effort has continued throughout the summer so far, according to Pasciuto. Come the early part of

Burke explained how municipalities decide whether paid parking makes sense. Burke, who has worked on similar programs in Maine communities such as Camden, said one key measure is the “85% occupancy rule.” That guideline suggests paid parking may be appropriate when about 85% of parking spaces are regularly filled, leaving about one open space for every seven occupied spots.
