Pizza Hut closes suddenly in Owatonna as hundreds of locations shutter nationwide
Local Pizza Hut customers were surprised to find the restaurant’s Oak Avenue location suddenly closed this week. According to a sign posted on the restaurant’s door, the Owatonna location closed permanently on Tuesday. While the reason for the sudden closure has not explicitly been identified, the chain’s parent company recently announced around 250 underperforming Pizza Hut locations will be closing in the first half of 2026. Pizza Hut is a subsidiary of Yum! Brands, which also owns Taco Bell and KFC. The company has more than 6,000 Pizza Hut locations in the United States alone. Yum! reported that sales at US Pizza Hut locations open for at least a year fell by 5% in 2025. Domino’s, one of the chain’s major rivals, has shown recent growth while Pizza Hut struggles. Yum! announced last year it was conducting a formal review of the brand, indicating Pizza Hut could be up for sale in the future. Brad Meier, President and CEO of the Owatonna Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, said news of the closure was just as sudden to the chamber as it was to the general public. He said little to no communication with the community is typical when nationwide chains
