Missouri Readers Suggested Their Favorite Books, Then The Library Wrapped A Parking Garage In Giant Versions Of Them

A parking garage in Missouri wears a row of book spines taller than a two-story house. I had to read that twice. Each spine stands roughly 25 feet tall, and there are 22 of them lined up like a giant’s reading shelf. The best part? Regular readers helped pick...

Starlight throws shade on 2027, and that's a good thing for KC fans of musicals

If the traditional 8 p.m. showtime for Starlight Theatre’s popular musicals is a bit late for your lifestyle, you’re in luck. Starlight will offer weekend matinées at the four weeklong musicals announced this week as part of its 2027 AdventHealth Broadway Series. The 2 p.m. performances on Saturdays and Sundays are possible because of Starlight’s $40 million overhaul that will feature a canopy shading about 3,200 seats. Ticket sales to the weekend matinées will be limited to about 2,500. The second phase of the construction project, which began in 2024 and was delayed a year because of funding issues, began this month and is expected to be completed in time for next summer’s slate of plays and concerts. In addition to the canopy, the project at the 7,800-seat venue in Swope Park includes upgraded entrances, kitchen facilities and bathrooms. Season tickets for the Broadway series cost $91.92-$781.92. They are available at kcstarlight.com and 816-363-7827. The concert schedule at Starlight, which has been operating since 1950, will be announced later. Here is the 2027 musical schedule: “ The Wiz,” June 15-20: This twist on “The Wizard of Oz” with Motown, gospel and disco music premiered on Broadway in 1975, when it

Photos: Trampled by Turtles brought high-energy bluegrass to The Truman

Trampled by Turtles brought the kind of emotional, evocative energy a band can create by honoring traditional bluegrass with a contemporary twist. With mandolin, fiddle, banjo, guitar, and upright bass driving the music, the Minnesota-based group has perfected their lightning-fast picking and a willingness to let acoustic instruments get loud. The strings chase one another, trade melodies, and build momentum until the music feels like it’s barely holding itself together. Beneath that speed is a more reflective side, with Dave Simonett’s songwriting bringing a thoughtful, sometimes melancholy edge to songs that can turn an entire room into a singalong. That balance between introspection and outright musical abandon has helped Trampled by Turtles move beyond the bluegrass scene and onto stages shared with artists across the Americana, folk, and rock worlds.

Murder, mourning, and ‘spookeasies’ at Alexander Majors house

Victorian America kept death close, and it left behind stories stranger than fiction. At the Alexander Majors House in south Kansas City, museum historians are digging into the era’s darker side for the Halloween season’s events. They include the “Victorian Macabre: History Spookeasy,” in which the museum barn becomes a speakeasy and the history gets grim.
