Get a vacant lot in Rockford through 'Mow to Own'

Rockford residents and nonprofits have an opportunity to gain ownership of vacant city-owned lots through the city's Mow to Own program, which exchanges property upkeep for ownership. The program has helped transfer smaller city-owned lots to adjacent property owners and nonprofits since 2015, according to a community announcement. Rather than purchasing the land outright, participants can earn ownership by maintaining the property through tasks such as mowing, landscaping, leaf removal and sidewalk snow clearing. City officials said 17 properties have been transferred through the program so far, with 42 additional lots currently available. According to the announcement, maintaining vacant lots can reduce municipal maintenance costs while also supporting neighborhood goals. City officials say well-kept properties can contribute to neighborhood safety, support property values, strengthen community pride and create usable spaces for residents. How the program works Participants are responsible for maintaining an eligible lot over time instead of buying the property through a traditional sale process. Required upkeep includes routine mowing, landscaping, leaf cleanup and snow removal from adjacent sidewalks. The program is intended for adjacent property owners and nonprofits interested in expanding and maintaining nearby land.
