Following the death of her mother, she was inspired to honor the sacrifices that mothers make for their children. After gaining financial backing from John Wanamaker, Philadelphia’s largest department store owner, Jarvis organized the first Mother's Day celebration in May 1908 at a Methodist church in West Virginia and, on the same day, the Wanamaker store held its first Mother's Day event.
