Newsom announces a state ‘strike force’ to smooth path for 2028 Olympics

On a weekday morning in Sacramento, the paperwork that usually crawls between agencies was suddenly treated like a starting gun. Gov. Gavin Newsom said California would stand up a Newsom Olympics strike force to clear delays standing between Los Angeles and the 2028 Games. The group, led by Jamie Callahan, is meant to push permits, transit work, security planning, and venue questions through a system famous for taking its time. For a city that has promised the world a Games in less than two years from the announcement window described in state coverage, patience is no longer a civic virtue. It is a liability.

UCLA head coach Cori Close speaks after lopsided win over UC Irvine

The No. 11 UCLA Bruins are 2-0 after a pair of victories over mid-major conference teams. On Thursday, Cori Close and the Bruins cruised to a 78-42 win over UC Irvine at Pauley Pavilion. It was a step in the right direction for a new-look UCLA team that will be looking to stay atop the Big Ten Conference after two seasons of dominance. Following the 36-point win, Close spoke to the media and sounded a bit more pleased with her team’s showing than she was following the season opener . “When I was with you after the first game, all I was doing was talking about defense, defense, defense and we really needed to gain consistency in that. I thought we weren’t as consistent as I wanted but I thought we made steps in the right direction,” Close said. “Irvine is a really well-coached team, they run tough stuff, our bigs still have to chase around people all the time.” The UCLA defense looked quite strong against the Anteaters, holding Irvine scoreless in the fourth quarter of the lopsided win. There are so many new pieces on the UCLA roster but the team still has the talent level to make

Picking Week 10 of college football in the Big Ten

Week 10 of the college football season is officially here! And while USC is off this week , there are plenty of other exciting Big Ten games on the schedule. So what can we expect to see in the league this week? Here are my Big Ten picks for Week 10: Illinois over Nebraska (Friday) The Huskers are probably the better team, but they will inevitably find a way to blow it yet again. UCLA over Minnesota USC has the 9-0. UCLA has a 9-0 football team. Purdue over Maryland Purdue is bad. Maryland is worse. Ohio State over Oregon Only elite West Coast teams are capable of beating the Buckeyes. Penn State over Washington Both of these teams have been extremely disappointing this year. This week, the disappointment continues in Seattle. Wisconsin over Rutgers Wisconsin bounces back from last week's ugly loss to Iowa. Northwestern over Iowa Speaking of Iowa, the Hawkeyes go down in Evanston. Michigan over Michigan State Expect another piss-poor performance from the Spartans.
