Harlem nonprofit WHDC’s board blasted over incompetence and squandered millions: ‘Things are starting to go off the rails’

An embattled Harlem nonprofit accused of squandering tens of millions meant for the area’s regeneration is hobbled by its feckless board, sources tell The Post. Frustrated with the West Harlem Development Corporation’s (WHDC) failure to capitalize on its near $100 million endowment from Columbia University, sources blame the long-procrastinating board, who have failed to make any significant investments to benefit the community. The fund has dwindled to $56 million and the 13 board members, many of whom have degrees from Ivy League universities, appear beholden to its chair, ex-judge Milton Tingling, and loath to challenge him, one former member told The Post. NY County Clerk and former Judge Milton Tingling is the chairman of the West Harlem Development Corporation. NYS Courts The nonprofit is also being sued by former board member and employee Vincent Morgan over allegations of antisemitism, racism and harassment by the group’s executive director, Zead Ramadan. As part of that lawsuit, Morgan claims Tingling called a meeting outside working hours in February 2024 where he told him “things are starting to go off the rails,” and told him to check with him before raising issues, according to federal court filings. Compass rentals lawsuit dismissed, refiled with new plaintiff

Compass was momentarily off the hook when a lawsuit filed Aug. 19 was voluntarily dismissed three days later — but the complaint was quickly refiled by a new plaintiff. On Aug. 22, Peter Castaneda and Haley Gelfand dismissed their rental monopoly claims against Compass with prejudice, meaning they cannot sue the brokerage again over the same allegations. A new plaintiff, Charles Lieberman, then filed a slightly revised version of the suit on the same day.

Blame Gov. Kathy Hochul and the Legislature for NYC’s power peril

New York City doesn’t have enough available energy to meet the needs of a serious heat wave or an especially frigid winter. Governor Kathy Hochul speaks during the 44th annual Dominican Day parade on August 9, 2026 in New York, New York. Lev Radin/Shutterstock The city is now relying almost nonstop on two aging emergency electric power-supply barges off Brooklyn’s Sunset Park to keep the lights on and apartments cool, Crain’s reports. In other words, Gotham is already relying on its last line of defense against blackouts, and at high risk of catastrophic failure. If these aging stations fail, or demand spikes in, say, a week of 100-degree-plus temps, we’re in big trouble. New Yorkers pay 3rd-highest electricity costs in US, trailing only Hawaii and California Blame Albany Democrats — Gov. Kathy Hochul and our feckless state Legislature. Under then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Albany rushed to close the Indian Point nuclear plant, choke off new supplies of natural gas and retire fossil-fuel power plants far faster than alternative sources could come online — while simultaneously booting electricity demand by pushing shifts to electric cars, heating and so on. And Hochul only recently began even talking about slowing down the madness. Gov.

The 2026 Top Trade Associations

Trade associations are power players in New York policymaking. Some, like the Greater New York Hospital Association, the Real Estate Board of New York and the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, are known for their enduring influence in New York City and Albany. Other trade associations garner attention amid battles over specific legislation, such as the New York Insurance Association, which lent support to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s recent crackdown on auto insurance fraud. Many of these membership organizations were established over a century ago, but some – like the Coalition for Ticket Fairness and the Ticket Policy Forum – have emerged more recently in response to an evolving economic and regulatory landscape.

Staten Island, Manhattan Homeowners Sue Mamdani Over Pied-a-Terre Tax Letters

Three New York City homeowners are suing the Mamdani administration over how the city rolled out its new pied-à-terre tax, claiming warning letters and a public property roll mistakenly swept up their primary residences alongside the multi-million-dollar second homes the tax was designed to target. The lawsuit centers on Staten Island residents Rachel O'Brien and Carmine Morano and Manhattan resident Simon Hedley, who say their properties were wrongly included on the city's list.

NYC homeowners sue Mamdani over bungled pied-à-terre tax rollout

A trio of Big Apple homeowners has filed suit to delay the state’s controversial new tax on luxury second homes — claiming Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration bungled the rollout and unfairly put the burden on homeowners. The disgruntled owners charge that City Hall is unfairly burdening them by forcing them to prove they are full-time New Yorkers if they do not want to pay the pied-à-terre tax , according to the suit filed Friday in Staten Island Supreme Court. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani initiated a “pied-à-terre tax” targeting luxury, non-primary residence properties worth over $5 million in NYC earlier this year. Instagram/@nycmayor The city Department of Finance “has arbitrarily and capriciously foisted onto New York City residents the burden of proving they are not subject to the Surcharge ,” the filing states. It also calls out the DOF’s move to publish a tax roll of nearly 1 million properties that may be subject to the new surcharge and the 17,000 notices it mailed to homeowners warning them they would be hit with five-figure bills unless they file for an exemption. Three NYC homeowners are now suing to delay the new pied-à-terre tax, claiming Mayor Mamdani bungled the rollout
