CONYERS — Rockdale County is moving forward with revised plans for a parking garage near the courthouse, removing more than $10.2 million in construction work from an existing contract as officials prepare to seek new bids for the redesigned facility. The Rockdale County Board of Commissioners approved a $10.275 million contract reduction during its Oct. 27 meeting, along with an additional $226,925 in design services for revisions to the courthouse, parking garage and proposed retail space along Main Street. Rockdale Director of General Services Andrew Hammer emphasized that the contract reduction does not mean the parking garage is being eliminated from the Judicial Administrative Complex project. Instead, the county is changing the garage's location and construction arrangements to accommodate a revised design developed in coordination with the city of Conyers. The $10.275 million deduction, approved as Change Order No. 8 to the county's contract with McCarthy Barnsley, a Joint Venture IV, removes the parking deck and associated Milstead Avenue sitework from the contractor's scope of work. Hammer explained that the parking garage was originally planned for a different location but was subsequently moved to property adjacent to the courthouse. That relocation required substantial changes to the design and construction plans.
