COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WRIC) — A woman said she and her family were the victims of a car accident on Saturday in Colonial Heights.

Courtney Sharpf said she, her three children and her father Mark Sodat were on their way home after shopping when a car hit her vehicle head on.

“It was me at a stoplight, and then a quick second — it was just the biggest impact,” Sharpf said.

According to a spokesperson for the Colonial Heights Police Department, the crash took place during the afternoon of Saturday, April 20, in the area of Boulevard and Lakeview Avenue.

Six people were injured as a result of the crash. According to the spokesperson, four of those people were juveniles — including the unidentified 17-year-old driver investigators reportedly found at fault for the crash.

Sharpf said the crash left her family physically and emotionally wounded.

“My oldest had four staples in her head and my other two children, the baby, who is one, ended up with a burn mark from the seatbelt,” Sharpf said. “My middle child, she’s also very sore.”

Sodat said he barely remembers what happened, only that he woke in the hospital in excruciating pain.

“From my neck down to my rear end on both my lower side and my back,” Sodat said. “I’ve got to use a walker. I’ve used a walker before when I had a liver transplant, but it was pulled out again last night.”

According to the spokesperson, the teenage driver is currently being held by police for drug and alcohol-related offenses. Sharpf hopes this serves as a loud warning for the driver about being responsible.

“I could have lost my kids, I could have lost my dad, I could have lost my life,” Sharpf said. ” I just hope [they] get the help that [they] need before it gets out of control. And if there’s a next time for [them], someone might not come out of it, might not be able to walk away from it.”
